HISTORY AND INFORMATION:
Fannin County became, at its creation on December 14, 1837, one of the original counties of the Republic of Texas and was named for famed hero of the Texas War of Independence James W. Fannin. Bonham, the county seat of Fannin County, was founded in 1837 when pioneer Bailey Inglish introduced a group of settlers in the area. Bonham, along with Clarksville, share the distinction of being the oldest towns in the Red River Valley. Bonham is justly proud of its rich heritage, its most famous son, Congressman Sam Rayburn, and as their slogan says, "Two Centuries of Texas Legend." Points of interest in the county include the Sam Rayburn House, the Sam Rayburn Library, Fort Inglish Park, some twenty-five homes, churches and historic sites designated by historical markers erected by the Fannin County Historical Commission, Bonham State Park, and Lake Bonham. Other area attractions include the Bonham Trades Days, Homestead Winery, and special events such as the Davy Crockett Days in Honey Grove. The Fannin County Fair is held each October. The Autumn in Bonham Bike Rally is each September and the Kueckelham Ranch Rodeo is every July. A harmonious blending...whatever one may be seeking - be it history and folklore, boating and fishing, sightseeing and shopping, museums and antiques, fairs and festivals, rodeos and livestock, natural beauty and a down home hospitality - one will find a harmonious blending of Fannin County's rich agricultural heritage with a contemporary lifestyle, consumer services, and public attractions.
